Politicians and Wealth Reproduction

This research project investigates the complex relationship between politicians' characteristics and policies that impact wealth distribution. By analyzing data from 50 democracies and conducting in-depth case studies in the UK, Germany, Brazil, and South Africa, the project explores how politicians' social and economic backgrounds might influence policy-making that affects top incomes. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research aims to provide transparent insights into the political mechanisms behind wealth dynamics.

We collect additional information on key politicians to understand the networks they are part of. This work package is led by Team Brazil.

Our research project is structured around four interconnected work packages that systematically examine the relationship between politicians, policies, and wealth distribution. Each work package builds upon the previous one, providing a holistic view of how political mechanisms potentially influence economic inequality.

We investigate how different tax proposals that could have impacted the wealthy evolved from their earlier stages until they were approved into law. This work package is led by Team Germany.

We measure the impact that different versions of policies could have had in terms of distributional outcomes. This work package is led by Team South Africa.

We collect background information on politicians, including on assets, board memberships, and side-jobs. This work package is led by Team UK.
